During the Second World War, the Viceroy of India was asked to release the interned Communists as a gesture of good will towards the Russians. The Viceroy consented but at the last moment got cold feet and said nervously: “But how can you be sure they’re really Communists?”

    Lovely story!
    Would that have been Wavell or whoever was before him?

    I've been wondering how many Viceroys actually went out to live in India. I know Curzon did, so perhaps all who followed him did also, but the very early ones?
