Pierre Salinger

John Kennedy's press secretary, Pierre Salinger, who died recently, ran for the US Senate in 1964. When he lost to the Republican George Murphy, he said in his speech conceding victory "the people have spoken - the bastards!"

    I thought this was "generally attributed" to Dick Tuck? But he said it in 1966, so ....

    And since then many others have felt the need to pinch the line to suitably express their deep sense of chagrin !
