The General at Home

From De Gaulle Mon Père by Philippe de Gaulle (translated by me):

Contrary to popular legend, my father was in fact generous with my mother... In later years, he would sometimes arrive home with a bouquet of flowers and a bottle of scent or a handbag. Naturally, he hadn't actually bought them himself. Instead he sent out his aide de camp to Guerlain or Hermès. Or he would write to me with the instructions: "Go out and get me something for your mother's birthday."
