Aubigny-en-Plaine is one of Burgundy's best-kept secrets. Tourists speeding to their destinations near the snow-capped peaks of the Jura mountains or the sun-baked plains of the fertile Rhône Valley, could conceivably do worse than halt their journey in this pleasant village stretching out on either side of the lush Vouge river. Blessed with a micro-climate guaranteeing over 60 days of sunshine per year, Aubigny owes its origins to its strategic position on the old trade route linking the Mediterranean to the bustling commercial cities of the north (Vesoul, Lure, Epinal, Langres, etc.). Those heady days have long since vanished, leaving a scarcely concealed feeling of surly resentment, but traces of an illustrious past may still be admired in the church of St Eustache, named after the saint of the same name, the communal wash-house and, more recently, the boulodrome out on the Cîteaux road.
How come we've never been to the boulodrome?
ReplyDeleteOr the wash house or the church, now I think of it.
The church is called Saint-Eustache? Really? I had no idea! Such a grand name for such a sh...y little church! And that boulodrome is news to me: sounds pretty awful! (but perhaps I can take the children there once this summer...)
ReplyDeleteActually, I've just discovered it's St Vincent.
DeleteWell, how come I didn't know that Aubigny was SO worth the visit. No doubt after this publicity, the top hotel chains will be checking this out....
ReplyDeleteFormule 1 has expressed an interest.
DeleteAubigny has a charm which may best be described as unique, though not so unique as St Symphorien...
