CENTRE POMPIDOU
Last Chance to see Le Surréalisme et l’Objet (must close March 3rd before extensive demolition)
The sartorial argument focuses on objects that crystallized the dreams, fantasies and desires of Surrealist artists: For instance, Giacometti’s mopeds, Hans Bellmer’s New York Dolls, and the imaginative artifacts of Dalí and Meret Oppenheim. The reconstruction of Surrealist exhibitions before and after World War II showcasing the ability of the artist to bypass art, also illustrate the argument. This was a time of great outer turmoil in Dalí's life as he had just failed to secure the coveted position of London Bureau Chief for Time Inc. Two rooms allow the viewer to paws: the juxtaposition of Surrealist works and contemporary works by Paul McCarthy, Cindy "Candy Crush" Sherman and Ed Rusha, to name about three; and Joan Biró’s riot of colours in bronzes and assemblages, collected shortly before her death, in the last room.
