Thankful for Small Mercies

Central African Republic, Nigeria, Rwanda (looking back), Somalia, Libya, Egypt, Israel, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Burma, Ukraine... A litany of woe and misery brought to our homes daily, courtesy of the BBC World Service.  Incidentally, the World Service has changed almost out of recognition in recent years, and I have to say mostly for the better though it's a pity that room can no longer be found for the odd light relief programme such as Just a Minute. The standard of journalism is extraordinarily high and the objectivity, in my view at any rate, beyond dispute.

In the light of such mayhem, we in the developed world should be thankful for the opportunity to lead our lives free from the shadow of fear and worse. We should be, but it is not a human characteristic to be satisfied with our lot and it is left to retirees like me who, having led a life of complete selfishness, decide in our declining years to spread the gospel of making do with what we've got!
