Choosing Names

Both Dickens and le Carré have a genius for choosing names for their characters. The names manage to be memorable and entirely plausible at the same time:

George Smiley
Toby Esterhase
Percy Alleline
Oliver Lacon
Monty Arbuck
Molly Meakin
Roddy Martindale
Tiny Ricardo
Major Tufty Thesinger
Phoebe Wayfarer
Roy Bland
Bill Haydon, etc, etc

The only name that didn't work for me was Magnus Pym in A Perfect Spy.
