The fact of the matter is that here in Western Europe people are just not interested in the question of Europe. We may lament the fact but it's true, isn't it? But there are signs that at long last we are for the first time beginning to take a personal interest in the EU. I have a sneaking feeling that televised debates would now actually reach an audience - something they have never done in the past. That is why I think it's absolutely essential to have referendums in all countries. To refuse to do so is to tacitly acknowledge that the only way for the European movement to survive is on a wave of massive indifference. A pretty dire admission.
