All About the French (2)

By their gait shall ye know them

As befits a nation of city dwellers, the French do not walk as the English or the Americans do. We Anglo-Saxons tend to stride, stroll, lope, loaf etc. The French gait tends towards the short and sharp, as though eager to express elegance in a limited space. Even when drunk, a Frenchman retains a certain precision in his movements, born no doubt of the need to avoid the endless bric à brac which fills any indoor space in France (see my next post).
