As of today, I would like to put my reputation as a blogger AND a gentleman on the line, and state categorically that Vladimir Putin will remain President of Russia next year. Not just the "power behind the scene" or the eminence grise. And for why? I'll tell you for why. Mr Putin will not be 56 until October of next year, a ridiculously early age for anyone to think of leaving the world stage if he can possibly avoid it. There can be no question of forgoing all those state visits and red carpets.
I leave it to others to suggest how he might manage this, but it shouldn't be too difficult to arrange something: an international crisis (there are plenty of these around), an atrocity of Bulgarian proportions, or perhaps a petition from the Russian people begging Vladimir to linger awhile.
Just remember that you read it first here. Thank you.
