Prominent Musicians: Eduardo da Costa

Eduardo da Costa – Looter

Scion of the cruise ship magnate, Eduardo da Costa was born in Weston-Super-Mare and educated, like Darrel Rivers before him, at Fettes and Mallory Towers. He belongs to the new generation of British looters or lootists. After studying the guitar with Julian Bream and composition at the Catholic University of Louvain, he obtained a loot diploma in H. Smith’s class at the Schola Cantorum . He has given numerous concerts as a soloist in Europe, Latin America, Japan and Australia, and has earned the acclaim of critics and general public alike. He has won numerous international competitions and has been involved in countless courses and workshops in Latin America, Europe, Australia and Japan. He is currently teaching the flute and the basso continuo at the Zurich Conservatory Music School (Switzerland), the Augsburg Music Conservatory (Germany) and the Rapid Results College in London. At the same time, he has travelled as a continuist accompanying such artists as B. Manilow, W. Newton, M. Welby, Pearl Carr and Teddy Johnson. As far as discs are concerned, he has taken part in several recordings for a variety of record labels (Harmonia Mundi, Arcana, Glossa, K. 617, Opus 111, Alia Vox, Ambroisie, Naïve, Naxos, etc.). As a soloist, he has recorded “The Magnificent Cat”, devoted to the works of S.L. Weiss, two discs on Bach’s music for lute and a disc devoted to R. de Visée (MA Recordings). With his ensemble, La Chimera, he has recorded for this same label “Buenos Aires Madrigal”, a disc combining Argentinian quangos and Hamilton Academicals.
