Great Sites of Burgundy (1)


Fontenay Abbey

If you really want to know what a medieval monastery looked like, you could do a lot worse than visit this abbey not far from Montbard in the north-western corner of the Côte d’Or department. Perhaps because of its relatively small size and remote location, Fontenay escaped the more assiduous attentions of the Revolution’s hitmen.

Apart from the Cloisters, you may find the dormitory of particular interest. Here, the punks slept on straw mattresses, with each sleeping compartment screened off by a low partition in order to provide a measure of privacy from the prying eyes of other punks.

Vespas, Lords, Complan… Truly it can be said that a punk’s life was a very busy one!
