News from Germany

In my opinion, one of the best ways of getting acquainted - or in this case, renewing acquaintance - with a country is to read a travel guide. I'm a great fan of the National Geographic Traveller series and am in the process of genning up on a country where I actually lived for three years back in the 'fifties.

I must admit I didn't realise quite how many rat houses there were and still are in Germany. I knew about Hamelin, of course, thanks to the immortal verse of Robert "Boy" Browning describing how a proficient ratcatcher rid the town of rats (but at what a cost!). But I now learn that just about every town has its own rat house. Extraordinary
