Tears and Recrimination

I sometimes wonder why anyone in their right mind would want to be President, Prime Minister, Chancellor or whatever. When you look back over the last 50 years or so, can you think of ANY political leader in the democratic world who has not left office harshly criticised at best, and ridiculed, humiliated, forced to resign or impeached at worst?
Is this because of the nature of the job itself which is bound to end in failure and shame, or because the sort of people attracted to it are not "in their right mind"?
I incline towards the former explanation. Unless you can get out while the going is good, the bottom line is always failure.
