Nature Notes

What should I see when looking out of my office window last Thursday morning, but a solitary swallow perched on the telephone line. Just like that. Bold as brass. No questions asked. What could he have been thinking of. it’s far too early for any self-respecting swallow to be around these parts, and I’m bound to say I haven’t seen him around since.

Could this be an instance of global warming or climate change? Speaking of which, just who are we to believe: the Establishment, i.e. Al Gore, David Attenborough and the Stern Gang? Or the naysayers, i.e. my brother, Claude Allègre and, just recently, a big hitter in the shape of the respected scientist Freeman Dyson? How on earth are we supposed to choose? Perhaps we should put the matter to the Pope, speaking ex cathedra of course.
