Dan Brown’s America

At long last, a brilliant little article in today’s IHT that exposes the essential dishonesty of The Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons. The article, by Ross Douthat, hits so many nails on the head that it leaves little more for me to say, except perhaps to draw particular attention to his telling distinction between ‘religiousness’ and ‘religion”.

The vast majority of Americans are no more religious than we are in Europe. They are, however, very interested in a ‘religiousness’ that provides ample scope for making plenty of money, getting married several times, and generally not getting in the way of the American Dream.
