Flotsam and Jetsam (2)

One of the nice but also annoying things about the web is that anyone sufficiently interested can easily trace the source of just about anything, including the extracts I posted the other day. Anyway, for anyone who is half-way interested but can’t be bothered to look them up, here are the references:

The Listeners, Walter de la Mare

The Scholar Gypsy, Matthew Arnold

Mrs Reece Laughs, Martin Armstrong

Stately as a Galleon, Joyce Grenfell

Sea Fever, John Masefield

Lepanto, G.K. Chesterton

All the Way to Alfriston, Eleanor Farjeon

My Word You Do Look Queer, Stanley Holloway

  1. Greetings Barnaby

I agree with your thoughts on the web and accessibility. In England recently a revealing blog by an anonymous policeman was alas, taken down when his identity was revealed. In Paris a year or two back, I recall the same thing happening to a secretary's blog though hers then went on to become a book.

Blogs in oppressed states like Iran show how much of a force for good the concept can be.

  2. Yes, I heard about the policeman. I bet he's not laughing now! Didn't know about the French secretary, though.
Absolutely agree about blogs in oppressed states. We never appreciate freedom, do we, until it becomes a precious commodity.
    Best
