The Sort of Person I Am

I know one shouldn't talk or write about oneself too much; on the other hand, and to paraphrase no less an authority than Brenda Lee, it's my blog and I'll blog if I want to.

Yesterday I was talking to somebody from San Diego and very soon got the impression that he owned a helicopter and that he flew it quite regularly from his home. For want of something to say, I asked him whether the neighbours took kindly to the noise and he said not really as a lot of them had helicopters themselves! I asked him where he went flying and he told me he liked to go to a place called Mission Bay. And so on and so forth for quite a few minutes. It was only later that I discovered from my daughter Laure that Tim, the person in question, was talking about his MODEL helicopter!

What I find interesting in this episode is precisely my lack of interest in Tim's helicopter, to the point that such energy that I possessed was channelled into asking what I hoped he would find interesting questions about it, rather than asking the only question that really mattered, i.e. how on earth could he possibly afford it. (Also, after the event, into wondering whether he realised that we were talking at cross purposes.)

So that's the sort of person I am.
