Gestures of the Modern Age

  • Women of all ages forever touching their hair, usually at intervals of 5 seconds and, in the case of American practitioners, often accompanied by the expression "I was like wow Brad Pitt". Not quite sure when this gesture came in . Shows little sign of going out.
  • Men and women of all ages holding a single-lens camera up to their eye or a compact camera at lap level as they take pictures of other people taking pictures of them, all parties notable for the inane grin on their face; Yann Arthus-Bertrand, leaning dangerously out of a helicopter as he plies back and forth around the globe, adding considerably to the world energy bill and coming back with photos that are not a patch on the stunning films shot by his unsung cameraman.
  • Men and women of all ages spending large tracts of their indoor and outdoor life speaking on the phone. The great thing about mobile phones is that they can give the impression that you've got lots of friends, are frantically busy, etc. You don't even have to phone anyone. Reading the football results will do.
