Saw Atonement on TV last night. I agree with the general view that it is a bad, or at least deeply flawed film saved only by a quite extraordinary cameo performance by Vanessa Redgrave towards the end.
What fascinated me was the strong feeling that I had seen the film somewhere before but I just couldn't think where or when. And then it came to me that it must have been some time last summer when my back was playing me up and I was taking various medicines to dull the pain. So I must have seen it in a drug-induced daze on one of those nights when I was banished to the TV room upstairs.
Oh, with Keira Knightley? I really, really liked that movie! I just did. What faults did you find with it?

I just felt that the film didn't really take off, partly because the first part was over before we had a chance to become attached to the characters. I thought that everything was a little too "distanced" and that it compared very unfavourably with another film which was very similar, at least in terms of plot: The Go-Between, directed by Joseph Losey and starring Julie Christie and Alan Bates.
ReplyDeleteI felt Keira Knightley was wasted in this film.
But the book (both in fact) were brilliant. Have you read 'em, Dubai Daughter?
