Atonement

Saw Atonement on TV last night. I agree with the general view that it is a bad, or at least deeply flawed film saved only by a quite extraordinary cameo performance by Vanessa Redgrave towards the end.

What fascinated me was the strong feeling that I had seen the film somewhere before but I just couldn't think where or when. And then it came to me that it must have been some time last summer when my back was playing me up and I was taking various medicines to dull the pain. So I must have seen it in a drug-induced daze on one of those nights when I was banished to the TV room upstairs.

Oh, with Keira Knightley? I really, really liked that movie! I just did. What faults did you find with it?

  2. I just felt that the film didn't really take off, partly because the first part was over before we had a chance to become attached to the characters. I thought that everything was a little too "distanced" and that it compared very unfavourably with another film which was very similar, at least in terms of plot: The Go-Between, directed by Joseph Losey and starring Julie Christie and Alan Bates.
I felt Keira Knightley was wasted in this film.

But the book (both in fact) were brilliant. Have you read 'em, Dubai Daughter?
