Re Room of Gloom

Supposing you were born with the surname "Room" but, for historical reasons, your name was pronounced as in "gloom" or "boom". How would you ever go about ensuring that people pronounced your name correctly? The short answer is that you would be doomed (as in loomed) to failure. I write as one who knows, for my own surname is regularly massacred over here in France not only in the spoken but also the written form, with the result that I am probably an illegal alien.
