This and That

  • I was interested to learn, while listening to From Our Own Correspondent, that the inscription on American bank notes "In God We Trust" was added as recently as the 1950s and 1960s.

One day her husband, Andrew Cavendish, Duke of Devonshire, overheard someone ask "Who is that woman?" of the person in the picture. "It's my wife", he said. The first man replied, "Well, thank God it's not mine."

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

The words "under God" were added in 1954.
