So very true. Which reminds me of a comment by Woody Allen: "I don't want to achieve immortality through my work; I want to achieve immortality through not dying."

And I cannot resist sharing this one by Bob Monkhouse: "I want to die like my father, peacefully in his sleep, not screaming and terrified, like his passengers."

  4. Thank you, lesle, for sharing this wonderful article. As Laure says, it really makes you think. The following extract particularly resonated with me:
"In my humdrum life, the daily battle hasn’t been good versus evil. It’s hardly so epic. Most days, my real battle is doing good versus doing nothing."

Oh Lesle, what a very good article you've posted - thank you.
Here in the UK we don't have the same tradition of a calling hour but the sending of letters or cards is right up there in the list of How to Behave. Sometimes these letters are very hard to write but they mean the world to the recipient. My brother-in-law gained great comfort from all the letters he received after my sister died and re-read them regularly right up to the day he himself died.
    Thank you from another Anon.
