I can't remember when the fields of rape have remained in flower for so long. The first burr of yellow was clearly visible as early as the first days of April and only now, on May 12th, are the flowers on the wane. Almost six weeks of bloom: this must be some sort of record.

A pair of magpies started building their nest high up on our birch tree, a sure sign, according to country folk, that we are in for a hot summer. That remains to be seen but unfortunately the nest fell victim to the mini-tornado that swept through the centre of France a couple of weeks ago. I know that magpies are not universally liked by nature lovers but I am always cheered by their cheeky, chattering ways, and they are such pretty birds.
