Torchbearers

The Olympic Flame has at long last I was going to write "set foot" in the United Kingdom but that can't be quite right. And now the torchbearers are in our midst. I picture them loping down the lanes of this sceptered isle à la Corporal Jones in Dad's Army, proudly bearing their torches aloft as they set off to cover the length and breadth of this proud nation. I myself will not be with them as I can't bear torches but I would like to wish them luck and Godspeed as they make their circuitous way to the Olympic Stadium in Stratford. I hope they meet a lot of good friends on their journey and that these friends turn out to be less ephemeral than those to be found on Facebook. Stratford: could this be the same place where Tom Scanlan and I long ago travelled on a trainspotting exhibition?
