Insofar as I ever gave the matter any thought, I had always assumed that "Brian" was a modern name. Not a bit of it, as careful reading of the Radio Times reveals. A certain Sir Brian Tuke was appointed as the country's first Master of the Posts by no less a monarch then King Henry VIII.
One of Sir Brian's estates was Layer Marney Tower, down by the Essex Marshes.
It's a long time since I've been down to the Essex Marshes, although the area is no distance at all from where I used to live outside Braintree. You would go through Little Braxted, Tiptree (where the famous strawberry jam comes from), on through Tolleshunt Knights and Tolleshunt D'Arcy, and finally to Tollesbury or Salcott.
I always remember this as a desolate but nonetheless beautiful area of lonely walks, huge abandoned ships and a haven for smugglers.
And here is a photo of Wivenhoe where my sister used to live.
I always thought of myself as a Suffolk boy, but perhaps I'm an Essex boy as well!
