A Matter of Protocol

When Evelyn Waugh was working as a journalist in Abyssinia in the 1930s, his ambiguous Christian name aroused the interest of a romantically inclined Italian press officer who met every possible train and plane to fĂȘte Waugh's arrival. "His friends declared that he had, with great difficulty, procured a bouquet of crimson roses. The trousered and unshaven figure which finally greeted him must have been a hideous blow."

The drill for showing respect or admiration to a woman is fairly straightforward: the usual form to show one's appreciation after a recital or aria is to shower her with a bouquet of flowers. But what to do when the artist is a man? Flowers, even of the most fragrant kind, might be considered inappropriate.
