I am no doubt very late in drawing attention to the misuse of these two words:
- Misspeak. "To express oneself in an insufficiently clear or accurate way". Used by politicians and other public figures as a means of not telling the truth or the whole truth.
- Mistake. An error. Much used by members of the financial community when such misdeeds as rigging the exchange rate come to light.
The clear implication of both these words, when correctly used, is that the fault in question was in some way accidental. Unfortunately, Misspeak and Mistake are increasingly used to mask or excuse a deliberate act.
