Inverted Snobbery?

I have been out of the country for some time, but I doubt very much that language use has changed that much.  I cannot believe that, normal circumstances, David Cameron would ever have referred to his father as "my hardworking and wonderful dad. Cameron has never denied his privileged background, so why should he himself "traduce the memory" of his father by using the word "dad"?
