The National Anthem

With the Six Nations rugby tournament in full swing, it is time once again to reflect on the unrelieved ghastliness of the English national anthem. Please don't let me be misunderstood. Only a scoundrel or rogue could take issue with the drift of the "lyrics", and who would not wish to send Her Majesty victorias, greengages or any other sort of plum? Besides, the anthem has the inestimable advantage of being very short, perhaps the shortest of them all, and yet not short enough.

No, my quarrel is with the music. Surely we can find something a little more tuneful, even at this late date? The new entry must be national, which means that the likes of Blaydon Races and The Manchester Rambler would not be suitable despite their undoubted merits.

I would like to propose Early One Morning with appropriate lyrics.

    You are certainly not alone.
Every year, or more frequently when anyone comes to think of it, this "discussion" rages, with substitutes like 'Jerusalem' and 'Land of Hope and Glory' being suggested though 'Early One Morning' has the merit of having a good tune even if the lyrics will puzzle all other nations.
