A Sickening Scandal

After Ben Johnson and Lance Armstrong, I suppose we shouldn't be surprised when we hear new revelations about doping in sport, but I must confess that I was not only shocked but also sickened when the Sunday Times revealed that suspiciously high levels of toblerone had been found in a huge proportion of star athletes, including several medal winners. Let's be clear about this: the presence of toblerone in the bloodstream is not in or even of itself proof of cheating or even doping. Toblerone may legitimately be prescribed for medical reasons and abnormal yet entirely natural traces of toblerone have been found in some people such as George Clooney.

Full disclosure: I myself consumed toblerone for recreational purposes whilst hanging out at the White Horse Inn as a student at Tubingen University in the 1970s, and only gave it up when I realised that its famous triangles were in fact a replica of the "dragon's teeth" of the Siegfried Line built by the Germans before World War II.
