As an Englishman living in France and with a daughter living in Houston, Texas, I often reflect on the continuing tension and sometimes downright animosity which all too often characterise Franco-American relations.
I came across a very interesting comment the other day which in my opinion goes some way - but of course not all - the way towards explaining this tension.
Contrary to what has happened in many other European countries, there has never been a significant wave of French immigrants to the US. As a result, links between the Old and New World have never been forged as they have, say, in the UK, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Sweden, Norway and Poland. By the same toeken, there has never been a French "lobby" whose feathers any US administration must take care not to ruffle.
Interesting, don't you think?
