Too Many

I'm a pretty slapdash sort of writer myself but I get tired of certain turns of phrase which are not so much clichés as meaningless stylistic conventions. Here are a couple:
1. "Too many", as in "There is widespread suspicion, even with the government, that too many innocent people are sentenced to death". You mean fifty or a hundred are OK but don't go overboard?

2. "More than". I don't know anything about marketing but I have a sneaking suspicion that one of the first things drummed into the head of prospective marketeers is always to be positive. Thus, we note that Toyota has sold "more than" 5,000 cars this month or that "more than" 20 people attended the concert. Relentlessly optimistic spins on disastrous events!
