Heres a generalisation

Here’s a generalisation which will no doubt be shot down in flames: American films are like American meals – the film reviews, like the menus, are often the best thing about them. The amount of times I’ve read glowing reports in the likes of the NYT for films which usually turn out to be so-so at best. And I’m not ncessarily talking about earnest, oscar-seeking fare either. One of the latest examples: The 40-year Virgin. Not a hopeless film by any means but virtually ruined by the current American weakness for excess.
