My much loved aunt Wilma died last Thursday at an advanced age. She was the last of the four Hessey girls, the others being Pippa, Elizabeth (my mother) and Anne. So now my generation is next in line, a sobering thought.
At Wilma's funeral next Monday, I have been asked to read the Epistle in the Authorised Version, which of course we Catholics are not familiar with.
It starts off:
Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice.
Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.
This was included in an e-mail sent by my cousin James. I then accidentally pressed a key on my computer and found myself confronted by the text I was busy translating:
Labour expenses have been kept to a minimum by setting up a registered workshop for handicapped persons in Poitiers and by transferring a large part of the production to low labour cost countries (Tunisia, Czech Republic). The hourly rate including charges is 11.3FRF in Tunisia (including the salaries of expatriates paid in France) and 31.6FRF in Poitiers.
Talk about going from the sublime to the ridiculous.... or from King James to the globalised economy in all its horror.
