Getting Tough with the Banks

I expect you are as disgusted as I am by the news of the huge not to say obscene bonuses that the wretched banks are even now getting ready to pay their senior executives. So naturally I did not hesitate a second when Gordon Brown asked me to head the team of independent investigators to look into this very question. It really is about time that the banks were made to see reason.

I told Mr Brown that I was free of all military obligations and ready to start work as soon as he liked. The only thing I insisted on was that my team and I should be allowed to travel first class and to put up in hotels commensurate with our status. To this the PM readily agreed, adding that he was in no particular hurry for us to report back to him and that he would not deem it scandalous if our enquiries and living expenses should run to a year or over. So that’s all right then.
