I am now up to the end of May 1944 in my grandmother’s diaries – 65 years ago almost to the day. D-Day is just round the corner!
On the strength of her diary entries, Gran remains as much an enigma as ever. I don’t know whether she consigned some of her more intimate thoughts to her letters, but she certainly kept a tight lid on them in her diary. We don’t know, for example, which of her sisters she preferred (or her children for that matter!). It leaves one free to savour the flow of everyday life and the very occasional and tantalising insights when, for example, Mabel becomes Mab and Reg becomes Reggie.
Personally, I find the transcription a fascinating and rewarding task – and there’s lots more to come!
