Dijon versus Dole

In terms of brand recognition, it's no contest between these two medium-sized towns, each about 15 miles from our house. Dijon is known throughout the world for its mustard, its wine and the Dukes of Burgundy. Whereas I shouldn't think Dole is much known outside or indeed inside France.

Both towns have their share of soul-destroying ribbon development and Stalinoid districts, but that aside, I really do think Dole is a much prettier town. This is partly because Dijon is unusual among French towns of historical importance in that it lacks a river of any consequence. Dole, on the other hand, has the lovely river Doubs flowing through it.
