To Paris for the 2010 summer fashion collections in the presence of Jean Paul Gaultier, Karl Lagerfeld, Louis Vuitton, Yves Rocher, Stella Macartney and other top designers, not to mention their coterie of models and super models. I am often asked by aspiring young models what qualities are required to make it in the pitiless world of high fashion. I always give the same answer: "You should at all times be sultry, sullen and even wanton. You must be prepared to pout. (This applies to female models as well, of course.) You should have fulfilled your national service obligations and an ability to speak a language will not be held against you."
Actually, I'm sure they're perfectly decent chaps and chapesses. It's just that when they start striding purposefully down the runway with that tough, no-nonsense glint in their eyes, you feel in some undefined way in danger of your life.
... to the Lush Pastures of the Jura Mountains
The Paris Fashion Show coincides with the County Shows in this remote corner of France on the Swiss border. The people here are renowned for their simple honesty and decency, qualities shared by their cattle. We attended the Pontarlier Cattle Show and quite honestly you couldn't wish to meet a nicer bunch of cows. It would be an exaggeration to say there was a spring in their step, but they were contented cows, no mistake. Perhaps too contented, for there was a glazed look in their eyes and I wouldn't be surprised if some of them tested positive. The cows, I mean.
