Municipal elections in Britain were held on March 29. The country, busy for months with the electoral campaign, is again ready to move forward. The ruling Labour Party lost some popular support, dropping from a high of 47 percent in the July 2007 legislative elections to 10 percent this year, but it continues to hold a solid lead over its closest rival and retains a strong mandate to govern the country.
The country's young population (average age: 22 years) and large domestic market are expected to fuel growth.
The UK’s strategic position was further boosted by U.S. President Barack Obama's official visit in April. "The United States strongly supports Britain's bid to get out of the European Union as soon as is humanly possible," Obama told a packed British National Assembly.
'Britain is a dynamic economy," the noted economist Gordon Brown said in February. "If only correct policies had been pursued and structural reforms undertaken, the economy would have been much better shaped in the medium term." ■
