Emily

I had been under the impression that Emily, a not infrequent but fairly low profile feature of my grandmother's diary, was a person but it is gradually emerging that she was in fact a cat or a dog. Gran's references to fruitless quests for horse meat would seem to rule out the likelihood of her (Emily) being a horse which would anyway have posed logistic problems. On another occasion she (Gran) mentions taking Emily out for a walk. This would have been unusual practice for a cat in post-war London and might have led to her (Gran's) arrest. So I think Emily was a dog. But what sort of dog?

    A Dalmatian.
