America is in no more a mess than the rest of us in the so-called "developed" world, but as the sole superpower for the next few years its problems loom particularly large. The question is: can it come back from the brink? None of the other great powers of the past ever managed to do so, so what chance America? The broader question, and one that concerns us all, is: can we in the West adjust to a lower standard of living without jeopardising what is in spite of everything still (just) a fair and decent society? Or will we continue to careen towards a world of infectious greed and winner takes all?
