15 August 1947: Indian Independence Day

Interesting that one of the major events of the 20th century, especially for India and Britain, should pass without comment in my grandmother's diaries. Was this because independence had been in the offing for so long that by the time it arrived it was no longer newsworthy? Or was it because the event was eclipsed by our own economic difficulties (to which she refers)?

Strangely our grandmother's diaries have disappeared from your blog, Mr. Dunn, but I think I am remembering correctly that other earth-shattering events hardly get a look in either, viz end of WW2 and the election of a Labour govt.

But it is odd given that her newest son-in-law must have been endlessly discussing the fate of India. Perhaps she was just tired of the subject!

  2. She did actually refer to VE Day and Churchill's electoral debacle, but didn't dwell on either of them very much!
