The Mark of a Good Columnist

I don't expect anyone to read Ross Douthat's latest column in today's IHT just because I say so. His subject this time is "The Marriage Ideal" with the subtext: "What are gay marriage's opponents really defending, if not some universal, biologically inevitable institution?". But that is not really the point. What is impressive with this writer is the way he sets out ALL the arguments (in this case for and against gay marriage) critically and sympathetically. Douthat has, of course, a point of view but there is never the slightest attempt to "rig" the debate or to deny the evidence of his own eyes, even if that evidence points in a direction with which he is not naturally at ease.
