If you were to come back to France after, say, 40 years living abroad, what changes would you notice most? The list is of course endless but, if you were of a religious persuasion, you might be taken aback by the total disappearance of those faded blue road signs at the entrance to small towns and villages announcing the times of Sunday or Saturday mass.
In the course of my time in France these signs have vanished without trace, replaced by hoardings pointing to such delights as Carrefour, Intermarché and Leclerc. This is not altogether inappropriate as shopping has now replaced religion as our standard weekend occupation and the supermarket is the new church where people come to worship at the altar of materialism. You can even exchange a cheery word or two at the cash desk on the way out.
