At the Tennis

I don't know if either of you agree with me, but for me the best part of a tennis tournament is roughly from the halfway point up to the Tuesday or Wednesday of the second week. By this time we have safely got rid of the riff-raff, that is to say all of the British players with the exception of Andy. We usually expect Roger to be hanging around at this juncture but unfortunately the great man was upset by quite a character from Latvia or one of those places called Ernest Gubils or words to that effect. Andy is still there and I hope he gives Rafa his comeuppance in the semi-finals but it will be a tough call as they say at the Académie Française.

Once the quarter-finals are behind us there's a slight tinge of sadness in the air as the end is now in sight. As is the ghostly figure of one Nelson Montfort haunting the grounds like Dracula in search of fresh blood. Where the men are concerned, and other things being equal, I have a preference for the "older generation" as we have in a sense grown up together. The newcomers will have to earn our respect. As for the women, I hope either Petkovic or Bouchard win it, with a slight preference for the former as she seems a most unusual and refreshing character.

Late result:

Men's Legends Over 90
Fred Perry (GB)
Dan Maskell (GB)

def.
Max Robertson (GB)
Nelson Montfort (FR)
7-6(3) 6-3
