Those of you familiar with the BBC's Desert Island Discs will know that, after choosing their eight discs to accompany their stay on a desert island, "guests" (as in hotel guests) are asked to choose, in addition to the Complete Works of Shakespeare and The Bible (or equivalent), a third work of literature to while away the hours until their death.
We are a hypocritical lot, aren't we, and I wonder how many castaways over the past 60 years or so have ever had the slightest intention of getting down to either the Bible or Shakespeare. Besides, most of the more interesting parts of the Bible are out of bounds to us Catholics.
Personally, I would choose The Complete Works of Agatha Christie. By the time I got to the end I would be ready to start over at the beginning!

DeleteThis brings two memories :-
ReplyDelete1. Gran giving me a Bible for my First Communion, which was promptly confiscated by the nuns;
and
2. You reading the Complete Works of Agatha Christie in French before you departed England to live in France. I've often wondered if this set you up well for your new life.
I'm not sure she had completed her works by the time I left England!
