More About Agatha Christie and P.G. Wodehouse

Some people admire them for the perfection of their plots or the brilliance of their style, but it is very easy to forget that in the years leading up to and during the Second World War, the Germans, and in particular the Abwehr, took a great interest in them for the light they shed on the customs of the English rural class and urban aristocracy in the middle years of the 20th century. In this way they hoped to fit in unnoticed and spy on their prey.

As it happened, all those years of textual study were never put to the test. My own view is that the Germans would have made excellent spies, their weakness perhaps being a tendency to speak a little too loud and to stand a little too close to their interlocutor.
