Little trace of the  sinister former Jesuit public school. Punishment was meted out by some of the toughest priests you would hope to meet this side of the Irish sea, now seeking gainful appointment in many parts of Africa?

In spite of the above, I had always assumed that Beaumont was not such a bad old school as these things went - until I learnt that my father wanted to send me anywhere but there! Not that we would have had much choice in his absence.

Did you really not know our father had wanted to send you to Ampleforth, because he so loathed Beaumont? But as you say, as matters turned out there was no choice.

My parents had wanted to send me to Downside until they visited that school and found that the boys all slept in dormitories. At Beaumont on the other hand most had rooms or at least cubicles. Not having to buy school uniforms was another plus for Beaumont hence we were sent there instead.

Even with the benefit of hindsight most in my year appreciate the old place and indeed are having a dinner there (in what used to be the Higher Line refectory) this November. Allowing for deaths (one sadly was killed in 9/11) the fact that over 30 old boys from the year are to meet then does signify that there was much good about the School.
